Position Summary:
The Veterinary Technician assists veterinarians with all aspects of the treatment and care of animal patients, educates clients on proper animal care, and promotes and supports the services offered by the St. Croix Animal Welfare Center. Veterinary Technician will work directly under the medical director.
Applicants must possess excellent animal handling skills (including the ability and willingness to safely handle aggressive, fractious or feral animals), and have solid clinical skills for administration of SQ, IM, and IV injections, placement of intravenous catheters, intubation, and surgical prep. Previous experience with high volume spay/neuter, surgical assistance and monitoring, and/or shelter experience is a plus.
Work Schedule:
Typical shifts for Veterinary Technicians are during the hours of 8:00am-6:00pm Monday – Friday, but the work schedule will vary based on the needs of the organization and animals in care and will include evenings when necessary. The St. Croix Animal Welfare Center operates seven days per week, 365 days per year.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Performs intake diagnostics and treatments to new animals as well as scheduled booster vaccines and deworming
- Daily medicating of animals (PO, IV, IM medications)
- Assists with surgical procedures (surgical preparation, monitoring, )
- Calculates, administers and records pre-anesthetic drugs. Completes controlled drug logs as appropriate.
- Monitors anesthesia during surgery, through post-anesthesia and recovery.
- Medical data entry, maintaining accurate and timely records
- Operates digital radiology equipment, and follows radiology safety procedures.
- Assists Veterinarian during clinic appointments and exams
- Performs dental cleanings
- Communicates with other staff concerning medical treatments, biosecurity and preventative medicine protocols
- Compassionate and friendly communication with adopters, volunteers, foster parents and clients on medical care, preventative medicine
- Restocks/cleans treatment areas
- Assists with inventory and scheduling for medical procedures
- Provides for the basic care of animals in the clinic including feeding and cleaning animals and their enclosures
- Assists with humane euthanasia, willingness to become euthanasia certified
- Cleans and prepares surgical instruments and ensures supplies are available and ready for use
- Maintains veterinary equipment in good working condition, reports repair needs as necessary
- Maintains satisfactory level of care by attending Continuing Education as required or assigned
- Follows all safety guidelines to ensure a safe work environment and takes immediate action to address any safety concern or noncompliance of safety rules that could put an employee, volunteer, client, animal or the organization at risk
- Supervises volunteers who are assisting with these tasks
- Other related duties as assigned by Veterinarian
Other Requirements:
- Excellent animal handling skills (including the ability and willingness to safely handle aggressive, fractious or feral animals) is required
- Demonstrated clinical skills for administration of SQ, IM, and IV injections, placement of intravenous catheters, intubation, and surgical prep is required
- Previous experience with high volume spay/neuter, surgical assistance and monitoring, and/or shelter experience is preferred
- No criminal convictions or injunctions at the local, state and/or national level which could demonstrate an inability to carry out the agency’s mission or programs
- Must work weekends as required to fulfill workload requirements
- Must have reliable transportation
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Standing for long periods are common, including working in a bent position and restraining large and strong animals that pull and jump. May be required to use strength and agility in capturing and restraining active animals. May be exposed to contagions and will be expected to utilize universal precautions to promote health and safety.

Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
