This position is an opportunity for an innovative, experienced community development professional to join a creative, growing community Foundation. The Program Officer will be responsible for managing a portfolio of grantmaking programs that align with the Foundation’s mission to cultivate thriving communities in the greater Big Sky area. This role will be instrumental in identifying and supporting organizations that are creating positive impact in the areas of Livability, Environment, Health and Wellness, Arts and Culture, and Education. This position requires a strong foundation in evaluation and data management and will also work with a range of stakeholders including grantees, community partners and other Foundation staff.

Overview of Responsibilities

  • Partnership-Building & Collaboration: Cultivate relationships with grantees, other funders, and key stakeholders to advance the Foundation’s goals.
  • Grant Management: Manage a portfolio of assigned grants. Review progress reports and communicate frequently with grantees and partners to monitor progress on project work plans, and providing technical assistance as needed.
  • Evaluation & Data Management: Develop and execute data-driven grantmaking strategies that align with the Foundation’s mission.
  • Continuing Education & Development: Stay informed about trends and emerging issues in philanthropy, data analysis, and holistic impact reporting and use this knowledge to inform grantmaking strategies.
  • Serve as liaison to Yellowstone Club support staff including but not limited to, annual impact report, annual program budget, annual reports for Board of Directors, philanthropic updates, and communications within the YC.

Grant Management:

  • Lead thought partnership and engagement with nonprofit organizations to identify critical initiatives within the Foundation’s focus areas.
  • Work with partners to cultivate high-quality proposals, engaging with organizations prior to submission, and throughout the review process with follow-up questions from the review committee.
  • Review grant proposals, prepare written analysis, and make funding recommendations to senior leadership.
  • Oversee scoring rubrics, and communications to team members to inform Grantee selection.
  • Assist community partners and the Foundation in formulating measurable outcomes.
  • Support grantees in developing and executing evaluation and improvement plans.
  • Identify training and technological opportunities to boost capacity of the nonprofit sector.
  • Provide technical assistance to grant recipients and partners to advance the Foundation’s initiative goals and facilitate the successful completion of Foundation-funded projects.
  • Evaluate outcomes of Foundation-funded projects and synthesize results for reports.


Evaluation & Data Management:

  • Work closely with grantees and community partners to identify what data and metrics are most beneficial in best understanding the needs and opportunities of the individuals being served.
  • Identify and implement best practices in equitable grant evaluation tools.
  • Collect and analyze data from grantees and other sources to monitor progress and evaluate the impact of our grantmaking efforts.
  • Develop and maintain databases, dashboards, and other tools to facilitate holistic impact reporting.
  • Ensure data platform is accurate, up to date, easy to understand, and relevant to donors, community members and funding partners.
  • Provide regular updates on the holistic impact of the Foundation’s grant portfolio.
  • Collaborate with the YCCF team, contractors, YC ambassadors and Board of Directors to develop and provide periodic reports to convey concise and timely information regarding the Foundation’s strategies, grantee stories and impact.
  • Support Director of Community Impact in managing strategies for effective cross sector data collection, partner evaluation and meaningful metrics of community impact related to the Foundation’s grant portfolio.
  • Support the Director of Community Impact in overseeing a community-wide data platform to track progress of YCCF-funded projects and initiatives related to quality of life in Big Sky.
  • Work with analytics partner, sciGaia, to identify and implement a strategy for ongoing data collection and analysis from publicly available data sources and community partners.
  • Collaborate with other Foundation staff to integrate data into our decision-making processes and ensure that we are using data effectively to achieve our mission.
  • Work with Director of Operations to update reports and processes that monitor progress of Foundation goals.

  • Must be able to work flexible work hours/schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays. Long hours may be required due to business demands.

Experience/Education Required

  • BA (required), MA (a plus)
  • 5- 10 years’ experience working with data in a nonprofit, government, or philanthropic setting. Preferred: leadership position within nonprofit sector.
  • Strong analytical and quantitative skills, with ability to interpret and communicate complex data to diverse

audiences.

  • Experience managing community level quantitative and qualitative data.
  • Broad knowledge on approaches to evaluation.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders

and build strong relationships.

  • Be an adaptable self-starter, comfortable working independently and collaboratively with teams.
