JOB DESCRIPTION
Long Neck Water provides water to a primarily residential area of Sussex County, Delaware. The District covers a roughly 10.75 square mile area east of Millsboro and west of Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. Long Neck Water serves water to over 4,600 metered service connections in 17 communities.
Position Title: Utility Worker
Department: Long Neck Water
Reports To: Distribution System Foreman, Director of Operations
Classification: Non-Exempt (hourly, overtime)
Hours of Employment:
5 days per week, totaling up to 40 hours per week. Overtime (1.5 x base) wages will be paid for time worked in excess of 40 hours per week. Daily hours are from Monday through Friday, 7:30am to 4:00pm.
In response to emergencies or weather events, you will be required to work on weekends, evenings or holidays as required by the needs of the business. You will be required to be “on-call” for scheduled periods of time. You will be expected to report to work upon short notice (i.e. 45-minutes) to respond to an emergency. On Weekends perform Water Plant Operations duties; Daily Rounds/Inspections. Grab Process Control Samples from Water Treatment Plants Running and System Sample.
Job Responsibilities:
- Water Distribution Systems. (Operation, Maintenance and Repair)
- Water Service Line Systems. (New installations and Repair)
- Water Meter Components. (Installation, Maintenance and, Repair of Meter Equipment)
- Water Meter Systems. (Reading, Testing and Repair)
- Walk for long distances on meter reading routes on customer property.
- Dig ditches or trenches, backfill excavations, and compact and level earth to grade specifications using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.
- Inspect assigned machinery & vehicles prior to use each day, to include spot checking fluid levels, damages, etc.
- Conduct routine operation and maintenance work & record keeping to ensure asset functionality and longevity.
- Complete Work Orders. (Pre-Maintenance, Repair, After Hours and, Customer Service)
- Ability to operate all vehicles or equipment you are assigned to work on.
- Performing other manual work in connection with the maintenance of Long Neck Water Company assets.
- Continuously observe work site and equipment to detect and protect against unsafe or hazardous operating conditions.
- Assist to maintains and repair all company Water Plants and, other Building assets.
- Customer Complaints: ( High Usage and Water Quality. Provide Information and Educational Information)
- Cooperate assist and work with other departments and companies at times.

Required Experience/Abilities:
- Ability to perform strenuous manual labor as the job requires frequent walking, bending, stooping, squatting, lifting, moving, and carrying equipment, tools and materials weighing up to 100 pounds.
- Can perform heavy manual work for an extended period, under hot, wet or cold weather conditions.
- Ability to communicate well with supervisors and co-workers.
- Ability to handle various hand & power tools and heavy equipment.
- Ability to disassemble, diagnose, repair & reassemble various types of pumps,
plumbing & machinery.
- Ability to read and interpret construction blueprints, site plans, manuals & catalogs.
- Ability to take measurements and readings with manual or electronic testing devices.
- Strong organization skills, attention to detail & follow up skills and Computer skills.
- Willingness to observe all safety precautions for protections against accidents, dangerous fluids, chemicals, etc.
- Water Plant Operations (Weekends) – Perform Daily Rounds/Inspections. Grab Process Control Samples from Water Treatment Plants Running and System Sample.
- High school diploma is preferred.
- Can respond to instruction and can acquire skills quickly through on-the-job training.
- Can understand and follow oral and written instructions given in English.
Uniforms:
The Company will supply you with logoed Shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, rain. The Employee must provide all pants for the work duties. Employee must present a positive professional appearance & attitude at all times.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):
Company will provide you with: work boots as needed, safety glasses, gloves, respirators, hearing protection, first aid supplies, reflective vests. Waders and/or hard hats will be provided if required by work conditions.
Other Equipment:
A company cell phone is provided with this position.
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $15.00 - $18.00 per hour
