Opening this Summer, The Lodge at Historic Lewes is Coastal Delaware’s newest senior living community. As we prepare our opening, we’re recruiting the area’s best and brightest to be a part of our opening management team.

This team will be comprised of individuals who are passionate about what they do and believe in serving seniors at the highest level.

One of these key positions Lewes Lodge is looking for is the role of Director of Recreation and Events – Independent Living. This person is integral to the success of Lewes Lodge and is responsible for developing and overseeing resident services, including planning and coordinating opportunities for Independent Living residents that promote a level of health, wellbeing, engagement and growth. The primary duties of this role include:

  • Plans, schedules and conducts lifestyle programs that provide physical, intellectual, social, emotional and spiritual opportunities for the residents.
  • Plans appropriate programs for holidays and special events.
  • Recruits and develops additional resources for services to the residents’ initiates correspondence including public relations communications with outside organizations, service groups and volunteers.
  • Advises and motivates residents regarding appropriate individual and group activities based on resident interests and opportunities for growth.
  • Prepares and organizes a calendar of events; submits the calendar to the Administrator for final approval; posts and distributes the calendar.
  • Utilizes and manages resident engagement platform provided by community.
  • Develops and facilitates daily displays of activities on bulletin boards and/or kiosks in lobbies, elevators, dining rooms and other resident and team member communication centers.
  • Implements and facilitates a Resident Ambassador program.
  • Develops and prints the community newsletter.
  • Provides leadership of wellness program and works with third-party provider(s) to ensure quality services are provided to residents.
  • Coordinates the community library.
  • Purchases and maintains equipment and supplies in accordance with budgetary guidelines.
  • Prepares preliminary draft of Recreation and Event Operating Budget.
  • Organizes and supervises a volunteer staff.
  • Addresses resident groups and other groups on subjects of common interest.
  • Maintains a database and prepares reports on resident assessments, participation and satisfaction.
  • Supervises Transportation staff as well as Recreation and Event Coordinators within Independent Living.
  • Works collaboratively with Recreation and Activities team members throughout levels of service in the community.
  • Participates in community in-services.
  • Demonstrates competence in Federal, State and Local regulations, requirements for assisted living and/or independent living as applicable; ensures compliance.
  • Develops, facilitates and analyzes resident surveys to determine ongoing activities are in place that meet the resident interests.
  • Plans, coordinates and facilitates appropriate mixed group activities.
  • Communicates throughout the day with all drivers giving direction to each regarding the day’s schedules.
  • Ensures transportation vehicles are maintained in good working condition. Have vehicles regularly inspected to ensure safety and cleanliness.
  • Reviews documentation from all drivers regarding daily vehicle inspections from their walk around, which are performed before all trips.
  • Oversees that all passengers are safely driven from community area to destination according to schedule.
  • Operates radio, cell phone or other device to communicate with drivers or other vehicles to report disruption of service.
  • Assists with vehicle registration and license plate renewal process.
  • Manages the purchase of gasoline, supplies and vehicle maintenance for transportation.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by management.

While we support continued learning and enrichment, and celebrate a culture that encourages learning new skills, there are base level requirements for this position that include but are not limited to:

  • Associate's Degree (AA) or equivalent from a two-year college or technical school, or six months to one year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certificates, licenses and registrations required:
    • Recreation, Therapeutic Recreation, Education, Gerontology, Social Work, Adult Education preferred or Activity Director Certificate from a state approved course.
  • Other skills required:
    • Three to five years related experience.
    • Two years supervisory/management experience.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally, speaking the primary language of the residents.
    • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
    • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence; ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
    • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
    • Ability to use Microsoft Windows, including Word and Excel. Ability to use software to design calendars and signs; ability to use email and the Internet.
    • Manages people effectively by taking responsibility for subordinates' activities; makes self-available to staff; provides regular performance feedback; develops subordinates' skills and encourages growth; improves processes, products and services.
