General Summary

GTI Energy, a leading research and development organization serving global energy markets, is seeking a Chief Technologist to join the Energy Supply & Conversion team as we create innovative solutions to current and future Energy challenges within our Lab and Bench Scale Operations Group. The position will be based in Chicago, IL, and will perform routine tests for general laboratory or field operations work under the direct supervision of professional staff. Familiarity with general safety rules and requirements is a must.


Location and Shift Work

GTI Energy’s corporate headquarters is located in Des Plaines, IL. This position requires employees on-site Monday through Friday. Remote work is not a possibility. GTI Energy’s working hours are 8:15 AM to 5:00 PM but this position may include first, second, and third shift assignments and field work as a part of periodic test schedule.

Primary Responsibilities

The position will report to the Manager of Lab and Bench Scale Operations and will support all operation activities in the Energy Supply & Conversion Department.

  • Read and understand P&IDs
  • Identify major equipment and its function
  • Identify and operate major and minor valves
  • Identify piping components, i.e. flanges (class and size), gaskets (class and size), socket welded, screwed, materials of construction, bolts, tubing fittings
  • Pass all OSHA safety training and display proficiency in:
    • Fork truck
    • Aerial lift
    • Control of Hazardous Energy, Lockout Tagout
    • Confined Space Entry/Vessel Entry
    • Respiratory Training
    • PPE
    • Electrical Safety
    • Employee Emergency Response
    • Fire Protection
    • Radiation Safety
    • Hearing Conservation
    • H2S Alive
  • Identify and operate routine startup and shutdown building functions, heating, water, ventilation, instrument air, nitrogen system, oxygen system, boiler
  • Experience with electrical tasks, isolating with breakers
  • Identify items to be ordered and send message to purchasing for order
  • Proficiency in hand tool use, grinder, drill, Sawzall, tubing bender, tubing cutter
  • Perform general housekeeping, cleanup
  • Support pilot operations as plant technician, will require shift work.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics
  • Ability to read diagrams and follow directions
  • Ability to communicate effectively through e-mail
  • Basic computer skills including Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Ability to lift 50lb.
  • Experience with small to medium size experimental test skid construction is preferred.

Education and Experience
  • High school diploma required
  • Coursework or experience of a technical nature appropriate to the job assignment
