The Department of Ophthalmology & Vision Science at the UC Davis Eye Center is an academic/clinical department consisting of 23 faculty members, including clinicians and researchers. The department also has 8 optometrists, 12 residents, 5 fellows, 24 volunteer clinical faculty members, and approximately than 150 staff members, with an annual budget of $22 million.
The Department's goals and objectives are to achieve excellence in patient care, teaching, research, and public service. Patient care must receive the highest priority with the best possible service in all areas of Ophthalmic care. In addition, the teaching of residents, medical students, and post-graduates physicians must be facilitated. PhD and MD faculty are joined in mutual research efforts to seek new knowledge in the treatment and prevention of blinding eye diseases. All of this is accomplished within the best working environment for all employees.

Responsibilities
This position is for an NIH, foundation and/or university-funded SRA I with some combination of experience in mammalian tissue culture, mouse biology, immunohistochemistry, and molecular biology. Research in the Ala Moshiri, M.D., Ph.D. Laboratory in Tupper Hall on the Davis Undergraduate Campus, investigates the genetic basis of mammalian eye disease and development.
Our projects explore hereditary gene mutations responsible for retinal disease using animal models and advanced cell culture systems. The SRA in this position will provide technical support and perform experiments under close supervision that involve stem cell tissue culture and differentiation of 3-dimenstional retinal organoids, mouse colony maintenance, immunohistochemistry of mouse ocular tissues, epifluorescence and confocal microscopy, ocular injections in mice, protein analysis by Western blotting and coimmunoprecipitation, molecular cloning, bacterial transformation, recombinant protein expression and purification.
The SRA will also be responsible for maintaining laboratory training records and inspections, maintaining equipment and lab infrastructure, mentoring undergraduate students, and stocking certain supplies. These and other highly specialized research techniques are required for our projects.
Required Qualifications
  • Demonstrated skill and experience with molecular biology.
  • Familiarity with protein analytical methods.
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills to obtain help when needed, such as learning new techniques from collaborators.
  • Skill with molecular cloning.
  • Experience with lab chemicals, reagents, and instrumentation.
  • Skilled in communicating and cooperating with others and working in a team environment.
  • Demonstrated skills to keep organized notebooks and records in a fashion that others can easily understand and utilize.
  • Mathematical skills required to perform routine calculations, prepare chemical solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to recognize problems and consult with the PI.
  • Ability to assist new personnel in the lab.
