Job Summary

The successful candidate will conduct a research project to study the distribution of DDT and its breakdown products in the San Pedro Basin. The Research Scientist will develop a new GC/MS/MS method for quantifying these compounds in sediments and seawater; apply the method to study the distribution of DDT+ compounds in samples from the San Pedro Basin; and develop a quantitative model of the breakdown and migration of DDT in sediments.

Essential Job Duties
  • Develop new GC/MS/MS methodology.
  • Analyze San Pedro samples.
  • Data synthesis and modeling.
  • Reporting, writing, and outreach.
  • Project management/coordination.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications
  • M.S. or higher in analytical chemistry, organic geochemistry, environmental chemistry, or another related field.
  • 3+ years' experience working in laboratory analysis of environmental contaminants.
  • Knowledge of EPA analytical protocols, organic chemistry.
  • Experience with GC/MS operation and maintenance; pesticide analysis.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in analytical chemistry, organic geochemistry, environmental chemistry, or related.
  • 6+ years in environmental testing lab.
  • Knowledge of EPA pesticide testing protocols.
  • Experience with laboratory analytical QA/QC procedures.
  • Knowledge of chemical fate and behavior of pesticides.
  • GC/MS/MS operation and maintenance; sediment extraction; pesticide analysis; environmental fate and transport modeling.
