Job Description
The Division of Global Neurosurgery and Neurology (DGNN) within the Department of Neurosurgery is looking for a qualified Research Scholar to support and lead projects within DGNN.
DGNN’s mission is to promote health in low- and middle-income countries through a multi-faceted, evidence-based, and collaborative approach to improve patient access to care and health outcomes, strengthen health systems, and inform policy. To achieve its mission, DGNN has a robust research portfolio that spans thematic areas (e.g., traumatic brain injury, epilepsy, rehabilitation, and computational modeling) and conducts projects that collect qualitative and quantitative data.
DGNN is looking for a research scholar to join our team to help provide research support to our ongoing research portfolio and help lead individual projects.
Work Performed
Perform various complex technical duties involved in conducting research tests, experiments, and determinations to obtain data for research purposes; compile, analyze, document, and draw tentative conclusions from experimental results. Confer with the principal investigator to review work assignments and develop plans for research experiments; make minor modifications to existing laboratory procedures and techniques to meet the needs of the particular project as required. Review laboratory methods manual, scientific journals, abstracts, and other literature for information applicable to research experiments.
Operate various electronic devices in data collection, tabulation, and calculation.
Assist in the development of new research procedures and techniques.
Maintain a sufficient inventory of materials, supplies, and equipment for performing duties. Review work of lower-level laboratory personnel and assist in training new personnel.
Lead project development, data collection, analysis, and dissemination.
Help lead a project team to complete tasks and meet project timelines.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein. Required Qualifications
Education/Training
This position requires advanced knowledge of research design, statistical analysis, and project coordination, generally acquired through the completion of a master’s degree. Additionally, training in team management and leadership is strongly preferred.
Experience
This position requires advanced knowledge of research design, statistical analysis, and project coordination, generally acquired through at least two years of relevant research experience in an institution of higher education. DGNN seeks someone with a passion for global health and prior experience in global health-related research.
The following experience is strongly preferred:
- Demonstrated expertise in establishing qualitative and quantitative metrics
- Experience researching, analyzing, and summarizing data and translating into compelling presentations, reports, and influence strategies
- Demonstrated commitment to and understanding of global health, healthcare continuum of care, and neurosurgical and neurology care within a complex decentralized organization, preferably in the context of academic medicine.
- A track record of breaking down silos and building bridges and credibility with a diverse set of constituents
- A track record of mentoring and engaging students
Skills
DGNN seeks someone with skills or exposure to the software, data collection, and data management areas detailed below.
Statistical software: Stata, Nvivo, MATLAB, R, Python
Data Collection: Qualtrics, Open Data Kit, Excel
Data and Code Management: Box, GitHub, Data Repositories
