Learning Prep School in Newton, MA is seeking a Certified Reading Specialist to join our dynamic team of highly-qualified special education professionals for the 2023-2024 School Year. The ideal candidate has a Master’s degree, Wilson and/or Orton-Gillingham certification, and at least 5 years of experience working with students with language-based learning disabilities.

This is a full time position: Monday - Friday 7:30am-3:15pm, with some after-school meeting days until 4pm.

Qualifications:

  • Valid reading specialist certificate
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree; education or a related field preferred
  • MA DESE Certification in Special Education - Moderate Disabilities preferred

Reports to: Assistant Principal

Job Goal: To provide leadership, coordination, collaboration, and innovation in ELA curriculum, reading instruction, and study skills, enabling each student to derive maximin benefit from the school’s programs.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists classroom teachers in the diagnosis of students and collaborates in planning the instructional strategies.
  • Assists in the selection of appropriate materials utilized by the classroom teacher for corrective measures.
  • Provides demonstrations of new methods and materials (i.e., team teaching).
  • Plans and conducts periodic evaluations to assess the need for changes in the reading program.
  • Serves as a resource to teachers and administration in areas of reading instruction and curriculum.
  • Provides leadership in the curriculum review, development, and implementation of the ELA program.
  • Assesses the reading referrals of parents/guardians, teachers, and support staff.
  • Provides for remedial instructional needs of students through collaboration with staff.
  • Conducts occasional small group instruction and staff development in content area reading strategies.
  • Ensures that reading is a component of all content areas of the school.
  • Provides for the integration of study skills throughout the educational program through small group work with students and collaboration with staff.
  • Supports a phonics-based approach to reading and reading comprehension.
  • Collects student data and monitors ongoing progress.
  • Provides and models differentiated classroom instruction through the implementation of curriculum content, methods, and materials, guided by the MA Curriculum Frameworks and Common Core State Standards, where appropriate, in accordance with copyright regulations.
