Infant & Toddler Head Teacher Job at LULAC Head Start Inc.
Summary/Objective
The Head Teacher for Infant & Toddler position will be responsible for the successful development, safety and sustainability of a diverse classroom. The incumbent will be responsible for providing professional leadership qualities while embracing LULAC’s mission. This position will also be accountable for implementing LULAC standards while ensuring high quality of education and providing inspirational and purposeful guidance within the classroom.
Essential Functions
- The infant and Toddler Head Teacher is responsible for the care, supervision and management of a class of infants (8 weeks-3 years old) in accord with the goals and curriculum plan of LULAC Head Start Inc.
- Ensures the safety and health of children under his/her supervision.
- Provides a comprehensive child development program.
- Works together with families to develop the skills necessary for school readiness of the children.
- Conduct focused observations of children.
- Develop action plans.
- Carry out activities on a daily basis and evaluate the effectiveness of child development activities.
- Contribute to the effective operation of the overall early care and education center.
- Focus on Data-Driven Results: Relentlessly pursues the improvement of classroom performance, and operations; and is driven by a desire to produce quantifiable achievement gains.
- Complies and follows state licensing regulations.
- Plans and implements appropriated classroom activities based on individual needs of the children and group.
- Carries out goals, policies, and activities outlined in the Performance Standards as well as in local and federal regulations.
- Maintains individual files on required information for each child.
- Maintains regular communication with parents, including classroom committee, written documentation and personal contact.
- Assists in appropriate referrals for children and families.
- Plans and ensures completion of developmental screening, lesson plans, home visits, documentation, and anecdotal observations within required time frame.
- Plans, develops and implements individual education plan if needed.
- Maintains proper classroom coverage, 1 staff to every 4 children or fraction of.
- Maintains small group interactions to no more than 4 infants and/or toddlers.
- Responds quickly to children’s different and personal needs (verbal and non-verbal cues), temperament styles, abilities, and cultures.
- Assist with transition into the program.
- Ensure that childcare routines are carried out in a manner that is prompt, hygienic, and consistent with good child development principles. This includes routines related to diapering, hand washing, eating, napping, and transitioning between activities, and others.
- Ensure the safety of children through constant supervision
- Participates and follows program policy regarding regular practice of fire drills and other emergency procedures such as code red.
- Participate in regularly schedule conferencing sessions, staff meetings, parent meetings, home visits, in-service training, and other meetings as directed.
- Greets infants and their parents warmly and with enthusiasm every day.
- Provide daily care individually to each infant, including but not limited to diapering every 2 hours and feeding on demand.
- Observe children to detect signs of illness, injury, abuse, neglect, or other special need, and report these signs immediately to supervisor.
- Maintain confidentiality of child and family information at all times.
- Eat with and assist children in development of social and self-help skills, and sound nutritional practices during all meals.
- Maintain a safe and healthy classroom environment. Assure that classroom equipment, furniture, materials, and supplies are properly maintained and stored.
- Participates in program annual self-assessment.
- Ability to prioritize tasks and be flexible to changes deemed necessary by Management
- Ability to analyze complex problems and able to resolve the problems in a reasonable timeframe based upon state and federal policies and regulations.

Required Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field with credits in ECE
- Early Childhood Training Certificate (ECTC)
- Infant & Toddler CDA (Child Development Associate Certificate)
- Experience in child development minimum one year
- Experience in classroom setting minimum one year
- Experience in working with infants, toddlers, and parents minimum one year
- Knowledge of Early Childhood Education
- Knowledge of child growth and development
- Ability to work as part of a team as well as individually.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to work under pressure.
- Ability in organizing, planning, scheduling and coordinating day-to-day activities.
- Ability to effectively manage a group of children.
- Ability to identify a child’s special needs.
- Must have a warm and supportive attitude and disposition toward working with children and their families.
- Must be flexible in receiving assignments or adapting to changes in the program.
OTHER JOB REQUIREMENTS
- Must have a health screening and TB test prior to start of employment & bi-annually thereafter
- Must pass a criminal records background check and fingerprint clearance
- Some positions in this class may require the ability to communicate with others either by oral or written communication in a language other than English.
