Summary: The Head of Organizing is responsible for growing and cultivating Sister District's community of volunteers with the goal of building enduring, year-round teams and affiliates that provide meaningful grassroots field and fundraising support to strategic state legislative campaigns and community-based organizing partners in key battleground states across the country. The Head of Organizing does this by leading a team of Organizing Managers to grow, train, and support Sister District volunteer teams. This position reports to the Organizing and Political Director.
Responsibilities:
- Volunteer Program
- Lead Sister District's efforts to mobilize volunteer leaders across the country with a focus on:
- Fundraising for state legislative candidates and community-based organizing partners
- Phonebanking to contact voters on behalf of candidates
- Sustainable, robust volunteer teams with strong leadership structures
- Engaged, delighted volunteers who are deeply committed to building power in the states
- Own portfolio of several Sister District Teams and Affiliates and be responsible for their impact and growth, and provide guidance to Organizing Managers, who are responsible for their own portfolios.
- Oversee the volunteer training program, including volunteer leader virtual meetings, resource library, and other written training materials.
- Oversee Organizing Managers' implementation of our youth programs for Organizing Fellows, Phonebank Fellows, and GOTV Fellows.
- Develop and implement cross-departmental initiatives to increase engagement.
- Serve as the content lead for the annual Sister District Summit, a national convening of volunteers.
- Oversee the development of new volunteer teams in targeted areas across the country.
- Cultivate relationships with existing grassroots groups in targeted areas to recruit partners to increase volunteer impact.
- Travel, as needed, to target areas to achieve volunteer recruitment and cultivation goals.
- Department Management
- Lead Organizing Department planning for on- and off-cycle work.
- Manage a team of Organizing Managers to ensure the achievement of collective goals.
- With oversight from the OPD, support the development and maintenance of departments' policies and procedures.
- Help to ensure adherence to mission, vision, and values.
- Additional Duties
- Collaborate with and advise Sister District Action Network's research staff on research initiatives pertaining to volunteer engagement.
- Perform additional duties as needed.
Skillset:
- 5+ years of work experience, including:
- At least 4 cycles of electoral organizing
- Experience collaborating with other organizations to effect political change
- Experience leading a volunteer management and training program
- Experience managing junior staff or interns
- Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, especially in light of new or ambiguous situations.
- Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication, as well as exceptional customer service skills.
- Demonstrated ability to successfully prioritize and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment and across multiple departments.
- Proactive and entrepreneurial self-starter who is able to anticipate and address problems before they arise, and suggest process improvements.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently in a remote setting.
- Extremely organized and detail-oriented, and as comfortable with big picture strategic thinking, as well as goal-setting, data tracking, reporting, and analysis.
- Proficiency with Google Suite.
- Multicultural competence; i.e., the awareness, knowledge and skills needed to work with others who are culturally different from self in meaningful, relevant and productive ways.
- Commitment to strengthening our democracy by building power in state legislatures.

We are looking to fill this position immediately.
Position and Pay
This is a full-time, remote position that can be fulfilled from anywhere in the United States. Pay will be commensurate with experience, in the range of $85,000 - $105,000 per year.

The Organization
Since launching in the wake of the 2016 elections, Sister District has grown to nearly 70,000 volunteers across the country. We have endorsed candidates in 167 races across 18 states, 107 of whom won and have gone on to fight for progressive issues in their state legislatures. We have raised more than $5.3 million in small-dollar donations directly for our candidates and State bridges organizations. Our Organizing efforts have reached out to more than 4.1 million voters through phones, texts, postcards, and door knocks.
Sister District has expanded our programs to include not only electoral work but also training newly elected legislators and former candidates, providing a full suite of campaign services to our endorsed candidates, conducting academic-quality civic research, supporting community-based organizations, and working directly with grassroots organizers.
