Job Summary

The Genomic Applications Project Support Bioinformatician will work with wet and dry lab scientists to interpret sequencing data in a range of contexts to answer biological questions. They will build bioinformatic workflows and give best-practice and project specific support on how to use our technology in real-world settings. The DNA/RNA sequencing projects are driven by customers/customer facing ONT employees and encompass a wide range of sequencing and analysis approaches, specifically tailored to individual samples and customer goals. Where there are no established methods yet, they will collaborate with other members of the team to explore how best to answer the biological questions posed and establish suitable analysis tools and workflows. The successful candidate will be able to prioritize projects across the entire spectrum of ONT customers, achieve technical expertise in sequencing projects and analysis, and provide feedback and support for the wet lab scientists working on the same projects. Additionally, the Genomic Applications Project Support Bioinformatician will be primarily responsible for results back to the customers, alongside the customer-facing teams.

Key Responsibilities
  • Communication with other Applications and ONT commercial teams to provide support on high value customer projects
  • Collaborating as part of a multi-disciplinary team on the experimental cycle from sample collection through to communication of the results
  • Developing computational pipelines for DNA and RNA sequencing data generated using our nanopore sensing platform
  • Working with laboratory-based scientists to help them plan and refine experiments, interpreting the data they have generated in appropriate biological context, and reporting the results.
  • Interacting with other bioinformaticians in the company to utilize and adapt their tools for analysis.
  • Working closely with wet lab scientists within Apps to provide required sequencing data following a defined experimental design
  • Preparation and communication of sequencing reports and results
Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide bioinformatics support to enable users to sequence and analyze their samples on ONT devices using ONT protocols
  • Complete analysis for customer samples, especially for samples and projects that have been unsuccessful through standard channels or that is for high-value customers
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot issues relating to turnaround time, sample multiplexing, sequencing performance including accuracy and output
  • Evaluate performance and stay to date with new releases of ONT products and approaches
  • Consult and provide advice on selection of sequencing kits, library preparation reagents, flow cells, and sequencing strategy and analysis tools for a given set of samples
  • Support projects in all customer focus areas including metagenomics, human disease diagnostics, clinical and pre-clinical workflows
  • Work collaboratively with cross-functional teams, including apps and commercial teams
  • Prepare results and generate content from insights gained during specific projects, providing feedback both internally and externally
  • Work with customers to follow projects all the way through to publication or presentation
  • Any other duties as might be required within the remit and responsibilities of the post.

The salary for this role is between $116,000 and $174,000 USD. The salary offered will reflect the skills and experience of the candidate.

Certain roles within ONT are eligible annual bonus and stock. These awards are allocated based on individual performance.
