Forklift Operator Job at West Fraser

This position requires an individual who will perform a variety of tasks related to the safe and efficient application of the technical skills and knowledge to industrial machinery.

Primary Responsibility of the Job:
- Work according to all correct safety & environmental procedures.
- Each operator is responsible for checking out his or her lift before use. Perform daily PM (preventative maintenance) checks before using equipment and turn reports in as instructed, completing the check-off sheet. Also, re-fuel your forklift for the oncoming operator daily.
- Pedestrians have the right of way. Always be aware of pedestrians working in your area.
- Operate equipment in such a manner as to not pose a safety hazard to & in a way that will not cause unnecessary downtime or abuse to equipment. This includes a safe speed, especially around blind corners.
- Maintain operating area and equipment according to general housekeeping polices & procedures. Perform all required equipment checks, PM’s and accurately complete all appropriate reports and general daily maintenance.
- Be particularly aware not to damage lumber with forks to not affect quality.
- Operator is to ensure that lumber packs are continuously removed from outfeed, in order to prevent downtime due to a backlog.
- Packs should be placed in the appropriate area according to dimension and length.
- Place cross-out pieces on all packs that are taken out to the yard.
- Packs are to be stacked carefully to prevent leaning or misalignment. Stack all packs four layers high, regardless to the storage situation.
- Check for rerun lumber that should be loaded.
- Downtime is clean-up time. It is your responsibility to check with your team leader to see how long the mill will be down and what you should do. Remaining idle while the mill is down will result in disciplinary action.
- Perform any other duties assigned by your team leader.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Ability to work with others.
- Willingness to accept greater responsibility.
- Must be able to work with little or no direct supervision and be able to handle high stress situation.
- Frequent sitting and standing.
- Moderate bending, walking, reaching.
- Frequent pushing, pulling, twisting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, repetitive movements.
- Occasional crawling
- Moderate bending, pushing, lifting (up to 50 lbs)
- Willing to work rotating shift, weekends, holidays, overtime.
