Ellsworth, an industry leading custom packager of adhesives, currently has a Chemist II opportunity at ResinLab, located in Germantown, WI.

The Chemist II works directly with internal and external customers and stakeholders to generate design plans, complete raw material qualification, validate of properties of new products and product modifications, reformulate and support current products, and assist with transfer of products through the commercialization process. The Chemist II has responsibility for test method development and training, and continuously develops subject matter expertise. They support the Product Development Department with sample preparation and testing.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Works directly with sales force and customers to collect application targets. Converts customer requirements to information that is verifiable through laboratory testing.
  • Prepares new product formulations to the design criteria specified by customers. Evaluation or reverse engineering of a competitor’s product may be necessary. Chemist II is focused on low, medium, and high complexity modifications of existing products.
  • Demonstrates and develops expertise in the fundamental scientific principles of formulation and material properties. May be assigned a limited number of new product development projects.
  • Highly skilled at operation of laboratory instruments, procedures, and test methods. Trains others as assigned. Develops new work instructions and test methods. Transfers knowledge to other departments including Quality and Production as needed. May assist with the commission of new equipment.
  • Completes raw material qualification using the written process or agreed-upon modifications of the process. May complete other testing in support of internal or external customers as needed.
  • Documents all laboratory plans, processes, and results in electronic laboratory notebook. Completes documentation for formulas through the product design worksheet and transfers formulations to production using the new product worksheet.
  • Provides recommendations for continuous improvement and actively participates on improvement teams. May include plans for addition of new equipment or instrumentation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college in Chemistry (or related field) and 5+ years of related industrial experience and/or training. Adhesive Chemical manufacturing experience preferred. Other combinations of education and experience may be considered as equivalent at the discretion of Human Resources and the hiring Manager.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
